An S.O.S. from aliens or another crop circle?
Opponents of regulatory oversight of natural gas hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, like to claim that there’s never been a case of fracking contaminating groundwater. However, the Wall Street Journal reports that drillers using the fracking process are ruining people’s wells. “In May, Pennsylvania regulators fined Chesapeake Energy Corp. $900,000 for contaminating the water supplies of 16 homes in Bradford County, Pa., with methane, including the water well at the Vargson home.”
The police made scores of arrests on Saturday as hundreds of people, many of whom had been encamped in the financial district as part of a lengthy protest, marched north to Union Square. As darkness fell, large numbers of officers were deployed on streets near the encampment in Zuccotti Park, at Broadway and Liberty Street, where hundreds more people had gathered.
Yet another artifact from the slow, painful death of Borders has emerged. A fascinating look inside a (justifiably) angry bookseller’s mind, this manifesto of sorts, “Things We Never Told You: Ode to a bookstore death” informs us of what those helpful Borders folks had to put up with. (I have to admit — seeing the list, I realize I’ve been a bad customer in the past). Hopefully, we’ll learn from our mistakes and treat the Barnes & Noble people better.
